ASSESSMENT
All individuals referred to SPS are required to complete an assessment by a licensed professional identified by SPS staff. The purpose of the assessment is to assess the individual’s ability to practice safely in his/her chosen profession. While not determinative of future recommendations, the assessment is a critical component of determining the need for additional intervention. Assessments may include:
- Physical Examination
- Mental Health Evaluation
- Substance Abuse Evaluation
- Gambling Assessment
- Anger Management Evaluation
- Psychological or Psychiatric Evaluation
- Neuropsychological Evaluation
- Pain Assessment
EXTENDED EVALUATION
If the assessment process does not identify a specific impairment, but concerns remain regarding the individual’s ability to practice safely, individuals may be offered an Extended Evaluation agreement. The Extended Evaluation lasts from six to eighteen months, and requires the following in order to document their ability to practice safely:
- Abstinence from all mood-altering substances, including alcohol
- Participation in random drug testing, a minimum of one time monthly
- Submission of prescriptions for all controlled substances
- Notification of employer of program participation and submission of quarterly employer reports
- Completion of all required treatment recommendations
PROFESSIONAL MONITORING
When impairment is identified through the assessment process, individuals will be encouraged to participate in a three- to five-year monitoring program to resolve issues and ensure their ability to continue to practice safely. Monitoring through SPS requires participants to meet specific requirements to document fitness for practice, including:
- Abstinence from all mood-altering substances, including alcohol
- Participation in random drug testing, a minimum of one time monthly
- Documented attendance at a minimum of two 12-step meetings per week
- Attendance at monthly caduceus meetings facilitated by agency staff
- Submission of prescriptions for all controlled substances
- Notification of employer of program participation and submission of quarterly employer reports
- Completion of all require treatment recommendations
